Linkerd Outside of Kubernetes: The Easy Way

Linkerd has long been a staple of security, reliability, and observability in Kubernetes. In Linkerd 2.15, we can finally extend these benefits beyond your Kubernetes cluster! We've explored "mesh expansion" (expanding Linkerd's data plane to non-Kubernetes applications) quite a few times in past Service Mesh Academy sessions, but until now, we've had to do everything the hard way.

No longer. In the upcoming release of Buoyant Enterprise for Linkerd (BEL), we have a new, streamlined mesh expansion management that can make deploying Linkerd on non-Kubernetes components significantly easier, whether on VMs, physical hardware, or something else. In this Service Mesh Academy, Andrew Gracey of SUSE's Cloud Native Edge Team will join us as we dig into this new feature. We'll demo a working end-to-end Linkerd deployment that spans both Kubernetes and non-Kubernetes components on a Raspberry Pi cluster running K3s.  Join us for a hands-on walkthrough of how to easily get Linkerd's data plane running on VMs, physical hardware, edge devices, and more!

What you'll get out of this
  • Learn how BEL can help make it easy to work with non-Kubernetes workloads
  • Understand why a lightweight, robust service mesh is critical even outside of Kubernetes
  • Know how to deploy Linkerd outside and inside your cluster
Getting Ready

This is a hands-on workshop, so it’s important that you arrive prepared with a Kubernetes cluster and the Linkerd CLI installed on your machine! Flynn and Andrew will be using the latest BEL release. Check out the BEL Getting Started Guide for specific instructions on how to set that up (we’re going to be showing enterprise features in this SMA!).

Tech Evangelist

Flynn is a tech evangelist at Buoyant, where he works on spreading the good word about Linkerd — the graduated CNCF service mesh that makes the fundamental tools for software security and reliability freely available to every engineer — and about Kubernetes and cloud-native development in general. Flynn is also the original author and a maintainer of the Emissary-ingress API gateway, also a CNCF project.

Flynn's career in computing spans nearly forty years and runs the gamut from bringup on bare metal to distributed applications, with a common thread of communications and security throughout. He has spoken about Linkerd, Emissary-ingress, and other cloud native technologies at several conferences, including KubeCon/CloudNativeCon, DevOps Days, and the NYC Kubernetes meetup.
