Linkerd Community Guide to KubeCon + CloudNativeCon EU 2022
Yep, it’s that time of the year again. KubeCon + CloudNativeCon EU 2022 is just around the corner and it’s packed with great Linkerd content! Whether you’re joining in person or virtually, there’s lots to watch and learn. To ensure you don’t miss all those delightful nuggets of Linkerd goodness, we summarized it all this Linkerd Community Guide.
Like last year you’ll find our team at three booths: the Buoyant booth in the expo hall, the Linkerd kiosk in the Project Pavilion, and our virtual booth. Each will offer different activities so be sure to stop by.
We are also excited to announce new virtual crash courses on cloud native tech, an unmissable ServiceMeshCon keynote from our own William Morgan (the co-founder of Buoyant), numerous meet and greet opportunities, talks, and more.
Here’s a round-up of what to expect at this year’s event.
KubeCrash, a new co-located event (virtual)
We are excited to announce KubeCrash — crash courses on cloud native tech. We’ve teamed up with our friends at CockroachLabs, Fairwinds, Pulumi, and Jetstack for a new KubeCon co-located event for “timezone-left-behinds” — KubeCon-grade content at an Americas-friendly time.
The event takes place on Tuesday, May, 17 at 9am PT / 11am CT / 12pm ET — no need for late-night or early-morning sessions. To learn more about the event, check out this blog post. We hope you can join us! Maintainer office hours (virtual)
Now’s your chance to ask the Linkerd maintainers anything. We are hosting project office hours on Thursday, May 19 from 13:30 - 14:15 CET.
Maintainer office hours (virtual)
Now’s your chance to ask the Linkerd maintainers anything. We are hosting project office hours via Zoom on Thursday, May 19 from 13:30 to 14:15 CET.
Meet the maintainers (in-person)
If you’re on site, swing by the Linkerd booth in the project pavilion, located inside the sponsor expo hall. Come join us for a live conversation with the maintainers of your favorite service mesh.
Featured KubeCon and ServiceMeshCon Talks (in-person and virtual)
Here’s our pick for Linkerd-related talks at KubeCon and ServiceMeshCon. Be sure to add your favorites to your schedule.
Tuesday, May 17
Surprise announcement (keynote). William Morgan, Buoyant.
A Deep Dive into How Linkerd Achieves Zero-Config. Kevin Leimkuhler, Buoyant (11:05-11:35 CET).
Zero-config is one of Linkerd’s claims to fame. For (most) Kubernetes apps, adding Linkerd doesn’t require user config, even if the app uses arbitrary TCP protocols which Linkerd must proxy in a fully transparent manner. Linkerd maintainer Kevin Leimkuhler will describe the mechanics of how Linkerd’s protocol detection works and cover the strengths and weaknesses of the current implementation, including so-called server-speaks-first protocols and why they need to be handled differently.
Lightning Talk: Locating and Debugging Failures with Linkerd and Telepresence. Edidiong Asikpo, Ambassador Labs and Alejandro Pedraza, Buoyant (18:16 - 18:21 CET). Use Linkerd and Telepresence to better observe and debug applications running in their clusters.
Wednesday, May 18
Multi-cluster Failover Using Linkerd. Charles Pretzer, Buoyant (11:00 - 12:30 CET).
Learn how to enable traffic failover for individual services across clusters with Linkerd by combining service mesh metrics, traffic shifting, and cross-cluster communication in a cohesive and automated way — while preserving fundamental security guarantees.
Thursday, May 19
Emissary + Linkerd: A Guide to End-to-end Encryption for your Cluster. Flynn, Ambassador Labs, and Jason Morgan, Buoyant (16:30 - 17:05 CET)
Learn about the painless way to get four CNCF projects (Emissary, Linkerd, Kubernetes, and Envoy) running smoothly together to provide end-to-end encryption for application calls.
Service Mesh at Scale: How Xbox Cloud Gaming Secures 22k Pods with Linkerd. Abereham Wodajie, Microsoft Xbox team (17:25 - 18:00 CET).
Come and learn how Microsoft deployed Linkerd to apply mutual TLS, observability, and reliability to 22,000 meshed pods across 26 clusters. With over 300 games available in 26 countries, Xbox Cloud Gaming processes an average of 1,000 sessions per minute. The app is massive: 26 clusters across 18 regions, each with 50+ microservices and 700 to 1,000 pods — all of which are meshed with Linkerd.

How Linkerd Helped Bink Partner up with Barclays. Mark Swarbrick, Bink (11:55 - 12:30 CET).
When Bink’s infrastructure team moved their apps onto Kubernetes, they experienced issues with the cloud’s unstable networking infrastructure. As soon as they started experimenting with Linkerd, network faults caused by the instabilities dropped significantly. The team was just starting conversations with Barclays and Linkerd’s metrics allowed them to monitor their SLOs and agree to the bank’s ambitious latency and success rated based SLAs. Join this session to learn more about how the team achieved their goals.
Linkerd End User Panel: Case Studies from Production (14:00 - 14:35 CET).
Hear from end users across a variety of industries on how they use the Linkerd service mesh in real-world production scenarios. Use cases range from applying mutual TLS to encrypt and secure all service-to-service communication, load balancing gRPC requests, and troubleshooting services before they’re pushed to production.
Overview and State of Linkerd. Matei David, Buoyant (16:55 - 17:30 CET).
Get an overview of the Linkerd project and an update on upcoming releases. We’ll cover the latest features and functionality; what to expect in upcoming releases; and how you can get involved in one of the CNCF’s most talked-about projects.
